Even the feat that allows you shove and push people with a shield does no damage - and it still requires a feat. It's not a weapon, and if you used it as such, it would be treated as an improvised weapon. So yeah, I don't see how Dueling is affected when you have a shield. You can make an attack with anything in your off-hand, but as an improvised weapon you do not get proficiency bonus and is relegated to at best a d4 (dependent on size) without any modifiers damage.Ī dagger is explicitly said to be a weapon, and if you have the proper fighting style, two weapon fighting is optimal action to take. Shields are not explicitly referred to or fall under the category as "weapon". The shield is not listed on the weapons table. ANYTHING held in your spare hand COULD be used as a weapon. You can use your free hand to attack, but that doesn't mean your free hand is automatically classified as a weapon (it just becomes a weapon if you attack).
